Members of the Hampton Roads REALTORS® Association (HRRA), an Organization Management Group partner since 2000, traded their professional wear for work clothes in December to assist at the Virginia Beach-based Judeo-Christian Outreach Center.
The effort was part of HRRA’s quarterly community service activities through its “REALTORS® Have a Heart” volunteer initiative.
HRRA REALTOR® and Affiliate member volunteers spent a morning and early afternoon pitching in at the nonprofit. From unloading trucks to preparing tables for the food pantry, babysitting to cleaning, emptying the freezer to making lunch, volunteers dug into the opportunity to assist the charity that provides 85,000 meals to the community annually and offers a food pantry six days per week. The center also operates an emergency shelter and provides food, housing, clothing and toiletries as well as case management, and also offers rapid rehousing and transitional/permanent supportive housing programs.
REALTORS® Have a Heart, with support from the association’s “I am one®” REALTOR® awareness campaign, is an effort of HRRA’s Resale Council, which plans special programs for REALTORS® who specialize in residential resale real estate. Throughout the year, HRRA’s REALTORS® Have a Heart has assisted at charities and nonprofits across Hampton Roads to give back to the community that the association serves.
Past REALTORS® Have a Heart activities have included summer beach cleanups during the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Save the Bay Day; spring cleanups at the local Ronald McDonald House; assisting in home construction during a Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads “Blitz Build”; cleaning and organizing warehouses for thrift shops run by Habitat for Humanity and the Union Mission, a Norfolk, Virginia-based nonprofit that provides counseling and over 315,000 meals, 119,000-plus nights of shelter annually to the homeless; and door-to-door “bucket brigade” relief efforts to hundreds of Virginia Beach homeowners impacted by massive flooding following Hurricane Matthew.
“As REALTORS®, we’re not just about the houses we sell. REALTORS® care about the people and our community here in Hampton Roads. We are proud to be giving back though our time and energy,” said REALTOR® Sherry Snyder, ABR, SFR, e-PRO, who chaired HRRA’s Resale Council and led REALTORS® Have a Heart efforts in 2016 and 2017.
HRRA also gives back to the community through its HRRA Foundation, a non-profit organization sponsored by the association. The Foundation is a channel for the charitable and community service energies of the professional real estate industry to assist charitable needs of the community and for education of the public and the real estate industry.
