Name and association: Ray Gunter, regional manager, C&F Mortgage, and president of Tidewater Mortgage Bankers Association
Current position within association as well as past positions within association: 2018 president. Also, 2006 president.
I joined TMBA because: I could give back to the business that has given me so much to me.
My favorite activity within TMBA is (and why): The many social events that we have. I can meet all the members of the other local mortgage companies and discuss the business on a casual basis.
Association involvement is important to me because: Our industry has changed dramatically over the last decade — some for the good and some for the bad. We need to try to give our input to these changes.
My best tip for engaging membership is: Make the functions fun and interesting, and people will want to come.
The best piece of advice I ever received was: Your reputation is priceless. Look back and say you never lied or took advantage of anyone.
My role model is: My father. He worked hard when I was growing up, and from him I learned to be trustworthy person and have a good work ethic.
In my opinion, the defining quality of a leader is: Lead by example.
Association volunteer leadership is invaluable because: Without the member’s input, there would be no direction for us to pursue.
I’m excited about the upcoming TMBA Charity Golf Challenge on June 7 because: Not only do we raise money for a worthy cause, it is a time to catch up with old friends and acquaintances at a fun event.
The best thing about working with OMG on the golf challenge and other events/activities is: OMG handles the minute details that we wouldn’t have the time or knowledge to get done.
I hope my leadership style inspires future association leaders.
